While India’s Independence Day celebrates its freedom from British Rule, the Republic Day celebrates of coming into force of its constitution. A draft constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Assembly on 4 November 1947.

The Constitution was passed by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 but was adopted on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country’s transition toward becoming an independent republic.

• The World’s Largest & Most Diverse Democracy:

The size of democracy, in this context, is in terms of population, not physical area. A government is only as large as the number of people it encompasses, With 1.25 billion people, or 17.5% of the world’s population, home to 8 major religions, over 4600 castes, as well as 22 federally recognised, 122 major and 1599 other languages in use, India is also the most diverse democracy in the world.

• 2^nd Most Populous Nation in the World:

India boasts of a human population of about 1, 283, 560, 000 people (approx..1.284 Billion), India is the 2^nd most populous nation in the world, only second to China.

• 3^rd Largest Economy by  Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) GDP

With respect to the value of all final goods and services produced within a state in a given year (GDP), India is the world’s 3^rd Largest Economy by Purchasing Power Parity with about $7.4 trillion worth of GDP. 

3^rd Largest Standing Army in the World:

With about 1,325, 000 (active military), 1,155,000 (reserve military), 2,288,407 (paramilitary), 4,768,407 (Total military), 3.9 (total per 1000 capital), 1.1 (active per 1000 capita).

 India has the 3^rd Largest standing Army in the world and also has spent over $45 billion on their military in year 2015 maintaining their position in the world’s top 10 according to military expenditure.

• 7^th Largest Country by Area:

With a total (both land & water) area of 3,287,263 km² (1,269,219 mi²), Land only at 2,864,021 km 2 (1,105,805 mi²), water only at about 302,393 km 2 (116,755 mi² ), and only 9.55% water of it’s area covered with water, India stands tall as the 7^th Largest country by area.

• 9^th Largest Economy by Nominal GDP: 

 According to IMF, World Bank, UN, and CIA world fact book list and classification, India is the World’s 9^th largest  Economy by Nominal GDP, sitting with about $2.051 trillion calculated with it’s official exchange rate.
